1. Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity

Teachers use their knowledge of subject matter, teaching and learning, and technology to facilitate experiences that advance student learning, creativity, and innovation in both face-to-face and virtual environments. Teachers:

.....a. promote, support, and model creative and innovative thinking and inventiveness
.....b. engage students in exploring real-world issues and solving authentic problems using digital tools and resources
.....c. promote student reflection using collaborative tools to reveal and clarify students’ conceptual understanding and thinking, planning, and creative processes
.....d. model collaborative knowledge construction by engaging in learning with students, colleagues, and others in face-to-face and virtual environments

My Reflection on meeting this standard (So What?)

.....The bulk of this technology standard deals with promoting creativity and online collaboration. Most online tools help to meet this standard in some form. Website evaluations encourage students to take a close look at other sites which can help them develop their own ideas. Social Bookmarking allows for the sharing of resources with others of the same interests. Blogs, Google documents, and graphic organizers foster the communication interaction needed for collaboration. Many of the remaining examples relate to making sure that we appropriately deal with the "legal" end of transformative works. When we transform the works of others to create something new, we must make sure they are properly cited. Bibliographic citation sites and Creative Commons licensing take care of that. Project sites like ePals and Global Monster project provide a wealth of ideas which can be altered to meet our district's needs. Of the five NETS*T standards, this one is probably the easiest to meet. Promoting creativity in our students is a natural part of what we do every day.

My Future Learning Goals related to this standard (Now What?)

.....In theory this should be an easy addition to our present curriculum. The problem is that online collaboration is still new to our district. We are in the early stages with the future looking brighter. With the opening of our new technology lab, we will have better access to technology on a regular basis. I have started with doing in-house collaboration with my 5th graders and will be opening it up to include collaborations with a high school group in our district. The creativity end of it is definitely the easiest part. As long as we have access to the computers we are able to work with the students on developing projects which will enhance their creative skills. The earlier we start the better it will be for the students because they will become comfortable at an early age. This comfort with technology is a necessary prerequisite so their creativity can flow uninhibited. My personal professional goal is to keep pushing forward, seeking out every possible opportunity to get the students in the computer lab, teaching them the basics of the available tools, and helping them gain comfort with our technology so they can incorporate free creativity with projects we offer to them. I have starting changing my huge 6th grade project to become entirely technology-based. I feel that is the key to success with this standard: making technology available to our students as much as possible and as early as possible.
